2013 ….Some of my favourites from the year. Family and children’s portrait photography, London. I have been making time to revisit the photographs I have taken this past year, my first year in business, in order to select my favourites. This task is easier said than done, but selecting favourites always helps me to develop as a phototographer in many ways. First and foremost, it makes me feel so grateful and thankful for all the families and friends, new and old, that I have been blessed to photograph. They have trusted me with sharing some of the most precious and simply beautiful moments, found both in grander celebratory moments as well as in their everyday lives. When you have to look at your own work and choose which photographs represent your best work, you are making choices which will inform the way you compose, light and edit your work the next time you pick up your camera. Gradually, with time your own unique style and approach becomes much clearer in your mind and your work becomes consistent. I love choosing favourites, although it’s hard! When a photographer starts out, they will nearly always tell you that they are capturing precious moments…. yet this does not tell us much about their personal style and approach. If an artist is to make a personal and unique statement with their work, that comes from the soul, they must look within, not all around them at the work of others working in their field. Whilst I admire so many photographers working today, I don’t follow their work too often, in order to keep my style fresh and unique, and to avoid become a blade of grass blowing in the wind with no direction. In the words of Judy Garland, ” Always be a first rate version of yourself and not a second rate version of somebody else”. For me, my success is based on the way my clients react when they first see their photographs…in this moment, where they are so visibly moved and thankful for the images we’ve created together, I feel that what I’m doing is right and good. To me, storytelling is everything. My heart and soul goes into creating timeless photographs that capture beauty and emotion in the everyday. I feel honoured to tell the unique story of each person and family that I work with. I want to seek beauty and truth in the everyday, however ordinary or wonderfully imperfect that day might be, in order to do justice to the memories that my photographs preserve. So don’t wait for perfect moments…there rarely if ever are any. Record your memories today, for today is fleeting and there will never be another. I have divided my favourite images in to two chapters. In this chapter, you will find the destination weddings of friends in Marrakesch and Seville, a family celebrating a Christening, newborn babies being welcomed by their families, my friend Zoe celebrating 40 years on this planet with her family and beloved horse, Piper, and lots of beautiful families, including my own, that I have been honoured to photograph as they go about their beautiful lives in front of my camera.
