London Family and children photographer
It was a pleasure to photograph this beautiful family in their North London neighbourhood of Islington, shortly before they relocated back to their home of Chicago. Here are some images from their two hour session with me, where we just walked around their local area, visiting all of their favourite spots. ‘Full feature’ family sessions like this one last approximately two hours and give us plenty of time to take in a range of different locations; and therefore a wider range of natural light and textures.
Your family photoshoot
There is a fine line between planning for a photography session and being spontaneous enough to capture genuine authentic moments. Pre planned images do not stand the test of time, and become mere reflections of what is currently in vogue. The things that I am interested in capturing are the connections that family members have with one another, photographed in a simple way in the beautiful natural light that can be found interwoven into our everyday. That’s not to say that I am expecting every session to go smoothly for the whole two hours…There are small children and babies involved in much of my work, so I always send out a guide once you book a session, with advice on how to handle things as they arise as well as what you can plan and prepare for beforehand. The session guide puts parents at ease before the day, because they know how we are going to handle things before they happen…They know how I want them to pose and they are relaxed and confident about the best ways to encourage their children to be great subjects as well. After all, having your photograph taken doesn’t come naturally to anyone, and everyone feels more relaxed when they receive some guidance on what to do and how to involve the children (both before and during the session)…resulting in timeless photographs that allow emotions to be expressed naturally.
I want to approach every family shoot with fresh eyes, ready to capture all the love and connection I see there using my own vision and interpretation. Sometimes I look for humour in a moment, while other times I notice a fleeting and beautifully quiet connection between family members. Selecting which moment to photograph, capturing the moment without forcing it or interrupting it, and then editing it in a way that is consistent with my style are all things that can be depended upon. The unknown quantity, and the thing that keeps me fascinated by the medium of photography, is discovering what that moment and connection will be. This approach is what keeps every family photo session individual to them.
