What better way to capture children than when they are engrossed in an activity they love to do? There’s no need to venture very far afield; there’s always plenty of inspiration all around us.
One rainy day in October on my friend’s farm in Wales, I picked up my camera and documented life as it was all around me. In the warm cosy farmhouse kitchen, I found children being helped to bake flapjacks, surrounded by delicious smells. I found some of the other kids helping out in the polytunnel; a great place to escape the rain and breathe in the fragrant tomatoes and rich, damp earth. They were so engrossed in their jobs, that they barely noticed me and my camera.
These are my favourite kind of childhood photographs. They capture children’s desire for independence, their joy at all the small things in life that we so often take for granted as adults, and above all, their true personalities.
