Family, baby and child portrait photography, London
One of my favourite things to photograph is a family welcoming a newborn baby into their lives. It’s such a fleeting time, and one so full of so many emotions, challenges and mind blowing changes that there is just SO much to document. There’s the new relationship between the new baby and each family member blossoming before my eyes;often I am one of the first few visitors at this precious time in a family’s life.
Households with a newborn baby always take on a special kind of energy…it feel at once peaceful and momentous; hard to describe really but I’m better with pictures than with words. What I set out to do in my photographs is to try and capture what it feels like to be there. Precious moments to revisit perhaps when life returns to normality and there is a moment for quiet reflection, to look at the photographs and think back to this unique and special time.
This home is our haven.
The pace of life slows
the minute I enter this house with it’s young life,
a toddler, full of energy but still wanting a cuddle with his milky bottle,
and a newborn
with a velvety head as soft as down.
We welcome this new day both peacefully and with care,
grown ups with a coffee close to hand
and all of us enjoying the welcome warmth the early morning April sunshine brings.
Poor Oscar, their dog, is feeling a little dethroned…
but his mistress is busy dealing with all of the necessities new life brings
such as nappies and the like.
This home is a welcome haven
with a bathroom that smells so familiar
of toothpaste and soap,
at once fresh and comforting.
I can take on the world
after being in this peaceful enclave.
