Children’s portrait photography in Wales
This is a selection of images from recent portrait photography taken on the farm in Wales.
With portrait sessions it doesn’t really matter where the location is…the most important elements are actually light, composition and having the ability to spot moments that are really worth capturing. For an image to hold our interest, it must have a timeless element that resonates with us, the viewer. Everyone was once a child, so with childrens portraits it is perhaps this timeless element that can transport us back to our own childhoods, and experience again the freedom that childhood brings with it, that captures our imagination. It’s also important for an image to be meaningful, and it is the interaction between people that can add an intensity of emotion to the image. It is also the interaction between the subject and the photographer that adds depth of feeling and a soulfulness to the image. Sometimes this can pose questions, which again draws out interest in as the viewer. What is the subject laughing about? What are they feeling?
Portait photography that will stand the test of time evokes both a mood and a moment in time that we want to revisit and will never tire of. This is why I try and keep a classical element to the way I compose and edit my work, and why black and white images speak to my heart. Allowing trends in photography world to influence our style as photographers means the image will fail to remain timeless and our photographs will become an additional voice that gets lost in the crowd. I prefer to stay quiet, follow my own path, and listen hard to try and hear what my soul is saying….it’s a very quiet inner voice, but one worth paying attention to. I love to work with clients who come to me because the recognise this in my work, and put their full trust in me, allowing me to follow my instincts, because they want images that are unique and reflect who they are. Sometimes I might capture a moment that is pensive and thoughtful , what I call an in-between moment, but mostly with children’s portraiture I like to celebrate the energy and the freedom, the sheer delight in life itself, that childhood brings.
